Can we use telecommunications to describe real, physical places?
Calling activity changes over time, and area by area. During office hours, there are more calls in working areas, while in the evening more calls happen in nightlife areas.

Using data from phone calls in London, we can detect working and leisure areas. With the same method, we can identify other activities and classify places.
Data analysis suggests that there are 7 main types of places:
Cluster 1: Rural
Cluster 2: Suburban
Cluster 3: Well-Off Suburban/Tamed Rural
Cluster 4: High-Density Urban
Cluster 5: Coastal & Small Towns
Cluster 6: Centres of Business
Cluster 7: Logistics
This is a new dynamic, user-generated classification of places that represent what people do.
